In complex driving situations, converting data from on-board systems like navigation or ADAS into sound sonification can lead to a safer driving experience without adding to the driver’s cognitive load. Furthermore, sound, as an immersive background process is well suited to unify the various subsystems together to provide a more cohesive HMI interface. This presentation will provide a taxonomy of in-vehicle auditory interactions and discuss possible sonification strategies relevant for automotive application domains such as infotainment HMI, safety and guidance. In addition, it will present an overview of many use-cases (e.g. lane guidance, fuel-economic driving, collision warning systems, semi-autonomous driving HMI, etc.) developed as part of different research or industry efforts within recent years where the benefits of using advanced interactive auditory displays can be perceived.
