Propagating traffic accident events to the following cars is one of major use cases of V2V communication. However, given the slow progress of adoption of native V2V modules embedded in the vehicles, it would be better to start with smartphone navigation maps (ex. Google Map and T-Map), which people spend most of time when driving their cars. Also, they have advantages of having access to the various sensors in the phones, such as accelerometer and gyro sensor, and cellular connectivity (i.e. LTE or 3G). However, it is not straightforward to utilize these sensors and connectivity for V2V communication, because they are not designed with the goal of this kind of real-time and critical scenarios. In this presentation, Seung-Mo Cho will review the issues related to the development of detection and propagation of such events among smartphones, and present the results of his experience.
